Hardcoded vs Soft Subtitles: How to Tell Which One You Have

Learn the difference between hardcoded and soft subtitles, how to identify each type, and when to disable a track versus remove burned-in captions from video frames.

Turn captions off before trying to erase them. Soft subtitles are a separate track that a player places over the video. Hardcoded subtitles are already part of the picture, so switching off captions cannot remove them.

The two can look identical during playback. This guide helps you identify what you have and choose the appropriate removal method.

Play the clip and choose English or Off in the player's captions menu. The dialogue appears from 0.6 to 4.7 seconds. Menu placement varies by browser.

Check your own video in three steps

1. Disable captions in a compatible player

Open the subtitle or CC menu and select Off. If the words disappear, they are separate from the picture in that playback context.

A missing CC button is inconclusive: some players do not expose every subtitle format. Also check for duplicate captions. A file can contain burned-in words and an additional subtitle track, so switching one off may leave another line visible.

2. Look for subtitle files and tracks

Check the video's folder for .srt, .vtt, .ass, or .ssa files. A player may automatically load a file with the same base name as the video. Temporarily move the subtitle file out of that folder, reopen the video, and compare. Keep the file so you can restore it afterward.

Subtitles can also be stored inside the video container. An MP4 or MKV extension alone does not tell you whether the words are hardcoded. Inspect the subtitle tracks in a compatible player or editor before concluding that the text is part of the image.

3. Inspect the video image without a subtitle renderer

Import the video without its sidecar file or enabled subtitle track. If the words remain in the source image, they are burned in. A screenshot of a playing video is not enough: the player may have drawn soft captions on top before the screenshot was taken.

If you still have the original editing project, check its timeline too. A caption baked into the exported MP4 may still be editable in that project.

What to do with soft subtitles

To hide them while watching, turn the subtitle track off. To share a copy without that track, use an editor or media tool that can exclude subtitle streams on export. Where supported, copying the video stream without re-encoding preserves its original quality.

Changing a player's display setting usually affects your viewing experience only. It does not necessarily remove an embedded track from the file you send to someone else. Reopen the exported copy and check it before sharing.

If you want a different language or corrected wording, edit or replace the subtitle track. There is no covered picture to rebuild while the original frames remain clean.

What to do with hardcoded subtitles

Use the original project or clean master if it still exists. Hide or delete the caption layer and export again. The editor can use the untouched footage underneath the text.

When only the burned-in copy remains, an AI subtitle remover can reconstruct the covered region. This estimates missing visual information; it cannot recover an exact original detail that the available frames never show.

Two common points of confusion

“Open captions” describes captions viewers cannot switch off. It often refers to burned-in text, but the viewing experience alone does not establish how a file stores its captions. The track and frame checks above are more useful than the label.

The editing app does not determine the subtitle type. A CapCut project can retain editable captions while its exported video contains burned-in words. Follow the CapCut export workflow if you need to choose between editing the project and cleaning a finished file.
